DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Blackwing Volumes Vol. 93: The Corita Kent Pencil
The pencils contain smooth graphite and the set includes two pencils of each colour.
Corita Kent was an educator, artist, and social justice advocate who believed that art could be a tool for dialogue, reflection, and change.
When she directed the Art Department at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, Corita asked her students to do "slow gaze" exercises. Using a paper viewer that simulated the experience of using a camera, his students could select, isolate, and examine the details of the world around them. This led to lots of drawings that taught students to slow down and see the world in a new light.
"Love the moment, and the energy of that moment will stretch beyond limits." -Corita Kent
This message of being present and curious permeated every chapter of Corita's life and work. From the 1950s until his death in 1986, his art moved from modernist interpretations of traditional religious themes to pop-inspired political statements and introspective examinations.
The Blackwing 93 is a tribute to Corita Kent and her message to slow down and find gratitude in the everyday. Each pencil features one of the six colored brushstrokes that make up Corita's iconic rainbow. Commissioned in 1971, the rainbow adorns a 140-foot-tall natural gas storage tank along the Interstate 93 in Dorchester, Mass.
A portion of the proceeds from this pencil will go to support continued work in arts education through the Corita Art Center.
